And that class she talked about? Creating Your Own VO Content? It’s part of May’s VO2GoGo Intensive. Perfect timing. And…if you head over to Amazon right now (as long as you’re reading this before April 25th, 2013), you can get the eBook she wrote, Eat, Pray, HCG: Lose Weight Fast On The HCG Protocol And Keep It Off By Gaining Peace Of Mind, for free. (She’s still working on the audiobook version – and it’s going to rock). He modeled it after my own. I’m so touched. Here’s what he said: “Though I had to go to 4 stores, I secured 2 pairs of RED SOCKS! Can’t wait to test it out! I’m energized…” And he set it up beautifully: I push the medium-strength athletic sock in the VO2GoGo training classes for a couple of reasons: they’re inexpensive compared to the foam and stretch-stocking-ring pop filters, and…they work. The same weave that wicks sweat away from your feet is also acoustically clear. And now, he’s got 3 spares to use when the first one wears out....Read More

When I started recording all 37 of my VO2GoGo live classes last November, everything was great. Except for one important issue with the audiobook intensive. And next Wednesday, I get a chance to correct that. What was it? The night we recorded the class on Fiction Audiobooks, and the two-part Mastering ACX classes, the video output from my computer was wonky. The nice people at Now Casting/AIA, where I do my tapings, had to scramble and gerry-rig up a television and camera to shoot the screen to see any of my slides. It looked, well, goofy. So, we’re doing it over. And that means you get another chance at one of the most requested classes I teach. And it’s a Cheap-but-Awesome class, so it’s only $20. And… …we’re doing another intensive the following night, Thursday. On animation, trailers and promos and managing clients and project. Also 20 bucks. Awesome.
The other day, I showed you how I helped my client Lee fix a noise problem in his recordings. The screen shots of his normalization dialog in Audacity caused a couple of people to point out that his normalization level was too high. I couldn’t disagree more. An example of the emails I got – this one from Charles: Hey David! Always love reading your stuff. I’ll make this quick. I noticed his “normalization” level is 0.0. Shouldn’t it be set to -3 as that’s what sites such as Voice123 require for submissions? Have a good one! Charles I get this a lot. And I’d like to take a moment to make sure that this misconception is cleared up. Voice123 doesn’t require that, they suggest that. And, I believe that they are completely and irretrievably incorrect in doing so. Normalizing a piece of audio to -3.0 dB reduces the maximum volume to only 72% of full volume. Now, I’m all for headroom and avoiding the possibility of distorting sound, but that goes too far. I want my clients to sound powerful and professional, full and rich. And at that level (-3.0), what you sound like is weak and amateurish and [...]...Read More

One of my remote ProPlus clients, Lee (who is, by the way, absolutely killing it in Norfolk, taking to VO like a duck to water – every month, he’s taking the video VO classes, sending in the work to me for review, we chat and he’s chugging right along) had a problem. He sent me this month’s homework, and while I was listening, I noticed a lot of unwanted room noise in his recordings. At first, I thought he might have the wrong mic selected in Audacity’s input device settings. It’s pretty common for that to be the case. But he wrote back saying that everything was correct, and that things sounded good before he normalized his work, so… And that was the clue for me. I asked him to record a clip, and normalize it, saving both versions as MP3s for me to listen to. He did me one better: he took a screen shot of his normalization dialog: (Click on it to see the full size screenshot.) He had his normalization set to 0.0. I like that – but look at how small the waveforms are in the recording! And you can see why: in the screen shot, [...]...Read More

Like Breakdown Services for on-camera auditions, all the good VO stuff is at Voicebank. But is that the extent of what you know? Along with the hope that someday, you’ll be repped by an agent and get listed there? (Those are the two things most people know, but some VO artists don’t even know that.) There is a lot to Voicebank that you can take advantage of, whether you’re with a VO talent agency or not. And I sat down with Ashley, the product manager for Voicebank’s Voiceregistry a few weeks ago, and hammered out the syllabus for two new classes in the VO2GoGo series: Mastering Voicebank, and Mastering Voiceregistry. In the Voicebank class, I show you some really ingenious ways to use Voicebank to make your demos better, to research potential agencies and to model your VO practice after the professional talent we all admire. And I’m going to give you a first crack at getting into each of those classes, both on the same night, this Monday at 7p. It’s part of a jam packed night of microphones, bridges and Death Stars. (You’ll have to be there to get all that.) And it’s just $20 (free for you [...]...Read More

I asked that of members of my SXSW audience. A lot of them didn’t know what it was right away, but it’s such a descriptive phrase that a lot of hands shot up. It’s true. In the world of VO, given the huge numbers of avenues by which we can get auditions (agent submissions, web sites like Voice123, ACX, Voices and more, existing clients, our own entrepreneurial bent and more), we could be facing 10-20 auditions a day. (A lot of the new faces at SX were a little shocked at that.) And I sure don’t want that large number of opportunities to be anything but exciting. Sometimes, it can look like a mountain of work. Here’s the secret I promised I’d share with you to make that pile of scripts feel invigorating instead of fatiguing: simply work faster, by making bolder choices. Let me explain: if you voice a take, and you’re not happy with the energy you display, don’t just ramp it up a little. Make a bold choice, speak to a larger space, and really turn up the heat. Don’t take it up a step or so, only to have to do the same ramping up again [...]...Read More

As I write this, I’ve just gotten back from seeing my friend Jenn Selke lead another great session here at SXSW on managing millennials, and being inspired by Jeffrey Tambor’s acting session. He rocks. And in just 24 hours, I hit the stage in the Big Bend room at the Hyatt Austin, leading my very first SXSW session. I’ve created a special blend of my VO2GoGo classes, Mastering Cold Reading, Mastering the Art of Self Direction, Voicing Animation VO and Mutual Muscles. I’ve called it Naked Auditioning: The Art of Self Direction – but don’t worry. No one will actually get naked. (If you’re here in Austin for SXSW, please join me as a member of the audience. It will be worth the trip across the river from the convention center.) The one thing I plan on leaving the audience with is that making bold choices, and making them quickly, letting the script do the heavy lifting, will lead to better auditions and more bookings. I was talking to a potential client today about VO, and the question of how to make adjustments came up (and I’m going to address those in the next edition of 60 SECONDS) – should [...]...Read More

If you’re a voice talent, the answer should be “a lot.” If that’s not your answer, I can completely understand. Microphones, even though they are our main physical tool, are sometimes the least understood part of the VO excellence chain, and certainly confusing when purchase time comes. I’ve decided to do something about that. I have heard so many of my students and clients ask simple questions about microphones that I decided to create an entire class on the subject. It’s called Mastering Microphone Technique, and it not only will show you how to speak into a microphone to get various types of reads, but it will give you the basics on how microphones work, what mics to purchase, and how to take care of them. I’ll also tell you which mics to avoid and common mistakes when “playing” a mic. I’ll even tell you what “playing a mic” means. And if you act fast, you’ll be able to get that information before anyone else: I’ve got yet another Cheap-but-Awesome video taping coming up on Monday, March 18th, 2013 – and you can be in the audience for it. And if you’re a VO2GoGo Pro, you get in free! (It’s [...]...Read More

[sfx: tympani, up and under] Yes. Yes, you should. Fiction isn’t the only broad category of books that you can audition for and narrate on ACX (and for the offline audiobook production houses). At last count, a full 22% of the books available on ACX for production were non-fiction, and another 12% were children’s books. These are often shorter books, with less time spent producing and an often larger fan base for the authors and rights holders – meaning more money for royalty split and stipend books. Plus – it’s fun. Who wouldn’t like to read a book to a kid? Or to an entrepreneur? I finally figured it out. As usual for me, it just took getting clean. I wonder…do you get your best ideas, your breakthrough moments, in the shower too? I don’t know what it is about a nice hot shower, but I’ve found that throughout my life, I’ve gotten some amazing breakthroughs in thinking by simply getting clean. Experts will tell you that isolation from distractions, no expectation of results or deliverables, and a whole host of other reasons contribute to the extra special space that a shower becomes for our thinking and reasoning. So, the next time you’re stumped, jump in the shower and see if that doesn’t jump start your brain. I take notes right on my shower’s glass door. I went online and found the old-school china markers that I used to use when I was a hotshot reel-to-reel audio editor and used them to mark the tape before slicing with a razor. Thank god someone invented digital audio editors. (And I’ve [...]...Read More

I do a lot of IVR work – and it’s one of my most popular classes. I’m the on-hold voice, the voice you get mad at while you’re waiting for the opportunity to get mad at a real live person, for many of the Fortune 5000, including AOL. AOL has systems that go back decades (I’ve been their voice since 1988), and although I can send them WAV or MP3 files for the modern systems they use, those older legacy systems are really picky about what kind of files they can play to callers. In fact, they are so old and [...]...Read More

Here’s the letter Audio-Technica sent to registered users of the AT-2020 USB microphone that I heartily recommend…warning that “certain microphone storage bags for the AT2020 USB microphone may contain a lead level in excess of the permissible limits under California Proposition 65″ and gives instructions on how to get a replacement. Pay attention to the dates shown for the pouch replacement in the letter, as you may be reading this post long after the replacement program has ended. (Click on the letter itself to see the full-sized PDF version.) If this letter has been sent only to California residents (I’m not sure as I just received it, I live in California, and I haven’t heard from owners in other states – comment below if you got one outside the state), the replacements may not be available to non-California owners – but I doubt Audio-Technica would refuse to replace your pouch if you asked....Read More

There are a number of studios that offer what are called “talent rates” for stopping by, doing an audition and sending it off. These rates are for VO talent that either have yet to install home/portable equipment, or are at the wrong end of town, or can’t get to your agency when a last minute audition comes in. Aside from recommending using Rehearsal or iAudition on an iPhone or iPad, use the following studios if you need a place to record an audition for a reasonable price. And please email me if you know of any others I’ve missed, or if you have corrections to the list. Los Angeles The Voicecaster (VO ‘n’ Go) 1832 Burbank Blvd. Burbank, CA 91506 818-841-5300 $10/10 minutes Voice Trax West Andrew Feliciano 12215 Ventura Blvd #205 Studio City, CA 91604 818-487-9001 $10/10 minutes Sessions Songwriting and Music Lauren Bruns 1739 Berkeley St. Ste. 101 Santa Monica, CA 90404 310-828-8909 $10/10 minutes...Read More

LAME, the MP3-exporting plugin for Audacity, enables software that doesn’t have built-in MP3 export capability (like Audacity) to spit out MP3 files. What does the acronym LAME stand for? It actually stands for LAME Ain’t an MP3 Encoder – and for good reason. It isn’t. You need to make MP3s, and Audacity (and LAME) are free and open source. The company that created the MP3 format charges money for each of their MP3 encoders that get distributed. That collides with the concepts and requirements of open source software. LAME is an open source, reverse engineered version of the actual, official Fraunhofer-Thomson MP3 encoder that the company licenses for money. A group of software geeks got together, and working backwards from a finished MP3, figured out the process (or their version of the process) that T-F created to encode MP3s. Reverse engineering of a technical process is recognized around the world as not being a violation of patents or copyrights. It’s as if a company figured out how to exactly duplicate the taste of Coca Cola, not by stealing the formula from Coke, but by working in a kitchen for days and months, trying different recipes until it discovered exactly the [...]...Read More

When recording an audition, the very first thing you want to lay down is a clear, precise and brief slate. Your slate is there to not only let the casting person know who’s speaking, but also to set the stage for your audition. A couple of rules about slating (that can be altered to taste, but try to follow them when starting out). If you’re the only role in the production, a simple statement of your name is just fine. Example: “Hi, this is David H. Lawrence XVII.” If you’re auditioning for more than one role, add the role to your slate. Example: “Hi, this is David H. Lawrence XVII as your announcer,” or “Hi, this is David H. Lawrence XVII as the customer.” If you’re auditioning for a production in which there are more than one roles that are being cast with your gender, then also add the role to your slate. For instance, if you’re a woman, and there are three roles for women and two for men, make sure to say which role your audition is for. (And, of course, never include more than one audition in an MP3 file – they may not know there’s more [...]...Read More

Making a demo with VO2GoGo is a breeze. It’s fun, it’s fast and it’s inexpensive. And you can start working right away. Our goal with VO2GoGo is to demystify and simplify the process of making a commercial voice demo, and to make the whole experience a satisfying investment of your time and money. We love watching clients walk away from sessions happy and excited, knowing that they can start getting auditions and work within a few minutes of putting their demos together. Here’s what to expect from the VO2GoGo process. Step 1: Ya gotta want it Ask yourself (and you may have already enthusiastically asked and answered these questions – if so, great): Do you really want to do voicework? Are you excited to work in a studio? Do you find advertising fascinating? Do you love performing, even if there’s no audience in front of you? Answering these questions with resounding “Yes”es is a prerequisite. It’s not about having a great voice (that helps, but it’s not the most important thing) – it’s about being committed to the art and commerce of commercial voice acting. Step 2: Have a conversation with David Start with a brief consultation with David H. [...]...Read More
