Why I Use One Single Channel For Crucial Communication

Hey there!

So, I got a message the other day from someone, looking for voice over support, on Pinterest.

Yep. Pinterest.

I guess that’s just what they happened to have open on their phone at the time they decided to contact me. And I gotta be honest…I didn’t even know Pinterest *had* a messaging system.

I would drive myself crazy following all the channels that I have created on social media for messages. For me, I’ve decided there’s only one channel I want to conduct important business on.

Can you guess what it is?

Hope this helps!

David

Raw YouTube Captioning

hey there it’s David H Lawrence the 17th
and the other day I got a message from
someone who wanted me to help them with
a voiceover problem and I had to chuckle
because the message came in in like
January or early February of this year
and the reason I didn’t see it is
because they sent the message to me on
Pinterest like Pinterest I didn’t even I
didn’t even know that Pinterest had a
messaging system that’s how little I use
Pinterest I mean I have a channel on
Pinterest
I have an account when I do these videos
the the the stuff ends up there kind of
I mean it’s a link to back to the the
actual page but I don’t really use
Pinterest that much I started using
Pinterest to show off really sexy
pictures of microphones and images for
some of the shows that I’ve been on as
an actor but it’s not a channel for me
to provide support when it comes to
voice-over or acting or any of the
products that I sell or the classes that
I teach and it made me think that we
have so many channels available to us
that we live in from time to time that
you sometimes make the wrong assumption
that oh well if I message somebody if
they have a if they have an account on
this system whether it’s Twitter or
Facebook or LinkedIn or Pinterest or
tumblr in the old days or you know who’d
YouTube that if I just message them
they’ll get it right they’ll get it
they’ll respond to me it’ll that’ll be
perfect they’re constantly hanging out
watching that no I’m not I watch one
channel and one channel alone and that
one channel is email that’s it
and I built all of my tools all of my
weapons to help you to be used with
email it’s all in one place everything
is is kind of filed in folders so I can
use the the tools in a group setting so
when I get a number of things for the
ACX master class I can reply to those
things in that Facebook group or
whatever but I get my notifications via
email and I use Gmail’s tool settings
plugins additional items to help me in
that process where I don’t do that on
Twitter I don’t do that on Facebook I
don’t do that on LinkedIn because it’s
just way too much for me to manage I
don’t want to have to hire somebody to
watch all of the social media channels
that I’m on so if you want help from me
and I’m happy to give you help
especially if you’re one of my pros then
I give you deep help um email me don’t
send me a messenger message don’t tweet
at me don’t send me a DM don’t message
me on Pinterest or Instagram or LinkedIn
or whatever choose to send me an email
and I’m wondering if this is iock I
don’t think this is the case but I’m
wondering am I just a Luddite I don’t
think so I think I’m pretty open to
technology I just know that I need to
focus and email helps me focus in a lot
of different ways there’s things that I
can do with email that I can’t do with
messaging on Facebook as an example they
just started adding rich text if you’ve
noticed some of your messages you can
add bolding and italicizing and you can
make h1 h2 headers things like that but
not so on Twitter and not so on
linkedin’s messaging system so that’s
what I use I use email he’s one channel
and that way I can concentrate my
efforts as well it makes me more
efficient it makes me a better support
person what’s your channel what is it
that you live in on a daily basis like I
live in Gmail what is it that you really
hang out on and look to be supported
with let me know in the comments below
if you’re watching anywhere but on vo to
go go go over there we’ve got all kinds
of cool things to help you out and also
you can subscribe to my list there just
look below the video if you’re watching
there if you want to see the latest
video I’ve done go ahead and click on
that frame YouTube will play it for you
I’m David H Lawrence the 17th watching
for your email I’ll talk to you tomorrow.

I don’t know how people with a bazillion channels can keep up or keep track! The fewer the better makes perfect sense. I have 3 email accounts, one for the daytime job only, one for my general life activities and one for special purposes such as contact with the VO community.

  2. Paula Faye Leinweber July 6, 2019 at 8:23 am #

Email for sure!!! David, you were the one who told me about Gmail and how helpful it is. I really like it. I’m with you about staying focused too. All these channels can be so confusing, distracting… I don’t see how others do it that use all the channels you mentioned. I can barely keep up with the FB groups I am part of, let alone all the others. Thanks for reassuring that I am not the only one that feels this way.

  3. Chris Ansoff July 6, 2019 at 8:37 am #

David, email is my main channel as well. I have had people send me messages on Facebook that I do not see for a long time sometimes. I think they are amazed that I am not checking Facebook every hour….

  4. Brian Arens July 6, 2019 at 9:35 am #

Me too – gmail for sure, and if I don’t get an email notification about a message waiting for me on Facebook, Twitter, etc. then there is usually a 0% chance I will see it.

  5. Tansy Alexander July 6, 2019 at 1:47 pm #

Great subject and timely too. It’s one thing to be able to easily schedule innumerable posts on multiple social media platforms in advance. But we must give thought to how we’re going to keep up with responding, especially if it’s part of your self promotion, or reaching out and connecting with fan base, or networking with business contacts that have reacted to the posts.
For sure email, specifically Gmail, is my foundation, my go-to.. However, text messaging gets my attention, and most everyone’s attention, faster and directly. With all the confusion of so many in boxes in so many places, if people really need to get ahold of me, i have them email me and then text me that they emailed. Gets my attention faster and keeps a written document of the actual discussion.
But David, I was wondering just yesterday if you know of any app that aggregates ALL of one’s social media conversations, notifications, replies to ones comments etc. A place to respond to everything, without all the peripheral distractions, and the hunting through every app for what you need to interact with or respond to. Honestly David you were the first person that came to mind that might know. You are a Tech guru,/expert, innovator and MacGyver! And today’s video was so on topic! Any ideas?

  6. David H. Lawrence XVII July 6, 2019 at 1:53 pm #

It feels like anytime someone tries to do that, they come up with something less than satisfying. I try to have my social channels email me when I get a message, but they all fail at that as well.

  7. Stuart Gauffi July 6, 2019 at 7:11 pm #

Here’s the differentiator about email: it’s a one-way integration opportunity. That is, every other channel gives you an option to get notifications emailed. They do NOT give you the option to get notifications through channels other than email (although an increasing number of apps are offering Slack integration). So it makes sense to have email be the communications funnel.
