Getting Started As An Actor: Here’s How

Hey there!

I was recently asked on Quora to answer a question, and it was a whole lot of fun to do so.

Here’s what the question was:

Acting: How can one get started as an actor?

If you’re an actor, how did you get started? How did you get an agent? Did you study acting at university, or did you jump right in? How did you get connections? Cause right now all I can think to do is try to find something that looks interesting on Craigslist… Thanks for the advice!

I didn’t think I would spend as much time as I actually did to answer this question, but here’s what I said. Continue Reading →

Pixar’s 22 Rules of Storytelling – Rule 17

Hey there!

You’re in for a long discussion if you ever ask me about storytelling, and how important it is to your VO career to develop and hone your storytelling skills.

It’s essential.

So, every so often, I like to roll out items from this list from Emma Coats, who used to work at Pixar as a story artist, and who serially tweeted Pixar’s 22 Rules of Storytelling.

How to Easily Add Special Spellings to Your iPhone

Hey there!

I love using “bb” for “baby” and other “enhanced” spellings when I text. Especially when I’m texting with VO2GoGo clients.

And my daughters.

But awhile back, I had to figure out how to stop my iPhone from dutifully trying to auto-correct everything I typed. There’s an easy way to force your iPhone to learn a new spelling. To make exceptions.

It’s a little counter-intuitive, but it works like a charm.

Here’s how. Continue Reading →

Is Audacity making you snap?

Hey there!

My friend, and client, Kirt Brewer, sent me an email recently, and it reminded me how frustrating Audacity can be.

He was having an issue with “snapping.” And he was close to snapping himself.

Maybe you’ve had that problem too? If not, you might someday. Just in case, here it is, and here’s how to fix it. Continue Reading →

POTS? VOIP? Wha?

Hey there!

In a recent workshop, I casually tossed out the acronyms (yes, they’re acronyms, not just abbreviations) for two types of telephone lines you may have: POTS and VOIP.

I got a bunch of looks (and later, email) from people whose common question was, “Wha?”. Continue Reading →

When To Make An Exception to the “Never Audition for Royalty Share Books” Rule

Hey there!

On ACX, you can get paid one of three ways to record an audiobook: a certain amount per finished hour (PFH), on a royalty share basis, or, in the best of all deals, a stipend book.

That’s an audiobook job that not only pays you a great rate per finished hour, but then sweetens the pot with the royalty share for every copy sold, funded by the rights holder. So it’s like a combo deal.

Problem is, ACX has discontinued that type of project. At least for now. And most royalty share book projects aren’t strong enough sellers that you’d make money with them.

But there is one case where I’d suggest you seriously consider a royalty share only book.

Here’s that case. Continue Reading →
