Dyslexia, And The Palindromic Poem. The Wha?

Hey there!

I often hear people talk about dyslexia potentially being a speed bump in their pursuit of a performance career, especially when it comes to reading a script.

I was researching this the other day, and I came across something that was simply heroic.

And I wanted to share it with you.

It’s not a cure, not a treatment, but actually a new form of written composition that spotlights and turns around the condition and how we look at it.

Whether you suffer from dyslexia or not, I’d like to challenge you to engage in it in the comments below…then share how you feel.

Here’s a sample.

How To Voice Copy That’s Set In Italics

Hey, there!

The other day, I got a question from my client Sara asking me an interesting question.

How would she narrate an audiobook passage that included some of the copy set in italics?

GREAT question. Here’s the answer. And here’s the other answer. And the other other answer.

PS: To celebrate 100 episodes, I’m going to hold a virtual AMA – an “Ask Me Anything” session – for that particular video. I’ll be looking through all the comments you’ve left for the first 99 videos, and grabbing any really good questions you might have and answering them. You can also “ask me anything” via email: just send your question to me, at davidlawrence@gmail.com, with the letters AMA in the subject line. I’ll try to answer all the questions I get – and it can be about anything you want to know about: VO, acting, on-camera presence, internet marketing, productivity, radio, TV, film, even the process and products I use to put out these videos.

Audible Retail Samples: Why They Suck And Why It Doesn’t Really Matter

Hey there!

I was looking through a Facebook Group for professional audiobook narrators I’m in, and this question popped up:

“OK, what does ACX do to tracks after they are ‘approved,’ but before they go up for sale?”

The OP (original poster) was upset that they sounded really bad compared to how great they sounded when she uploaded them, and asked what she could do about it.

Sadly, my answer didn’t make her very happy.

Are You Committed? Or Just…Interested?

Hey there!

I was tickled to death by an article by Anthony Moore that really connected: he’s been trying to put together a comprehensive course, one that he can sell online (like I do with VO2GoGo Pro and the ACX Master Class).

He quotes John Assaraf, discussing commitment levels and the difference between dabbling and engaging…interest and commitment.

Where are you? And how can knowing the difference make all the difference in the world?

Prioritizing…Nashville Style

Hey there!

I love Nashville – I love the music, the people (J. Rodney Turner’s there!), I’ve been in films there, I have family there, and there’s a vibe about that town that’s like no other – they get stuff done.

So it’s natural that a Nashvillian would come up with four great ways to make some sense out of your to-do list.

Here are four tips that one NashVegas resident has for making things happen.

The Two Things People Judge About You Within Seconds

Hey there!

I’m a big fan of Dr. Travis Bradberry – and of Amy Cuddy.

(If you haven’t seen their TED talks, or read their books, I think you’ll find them awesome.)

Dr. Bradberry recently noted the research that Ms. Cuddy undertook to observe what happens when people first meet you – that first impression.

He took it a bit further, and shared how you can put your best two feet forward.

The Guaranteed Way To Completely Avoid Criticism

Hey there!

How does it feel to be criticized? Even when you invite it, it’s still sometimes hard to take. You say, “I welcome your comments,” and when someone does…it still stings a bit.

I recently heard a speaker, with a quote he attributed to Aristotle, lay out the three things you need to do to never feel the pain of a critical comment.

Here they are in a nutshell. Oh, and here’s who actually said it.
