Where I Workshop – Part 1

Hey, there!

Actors I meet will often ask me to recommend casting workshop locations that I’ve personally found useful.

I’m going to share some of my favorites in this and upcoming blog posts, and the first one is Connect Studios LA.

And there’s a reason they’re first – they also kindly allow me to teach the VO2GoGo curriculum there.

Here’s what makes them great.

This workshop location used to be called Signature Studios, and I attended dozens of casting workshops there in the mid-2000s as I was learning my craft, and meeting my customers (casting directors, assistants and associates). The original owners sold it to the current owners, Doug and Ayumi, a few years ago, and they moved into a more spacious location in Burbank.

Doug and Ayumi have taught improv for years at The Second City here in LA.

And they rock. The family feeling there is awesome, and they bring in directors, writers, producers and other customers of yours.

I asked Ayumi to tell me in her amazingly refreshing way what makes Connect Studios essential to your list of casting workshop locations:

Sick of sitting on the sidelines while other actors are auditioning during this busy Episodic Season? Time to take your career into your own hands and learn from top casting directors who are currently casting your favorite TV shows and movies!

Wonder where the working actors workshop?

Connect Studios LA has been delivering casting director workshops since 2004 and attracts the top casting directors in town. Many casting directors tell us we are their favorite place to teach not only because of our professional atmosphere, but also because of the high level of talent they meet in our classes. This is reflected in the high number of actors who get called in from our workshops. Our workshops are predominantly classroom-style, ensuring a great learning experience. We offer both cold-read and prepared-material workshops. We let the casting directors decide what format works best for them – we don’t impose a format on them.

Since we (Doug and Ayumi) are both working, professional actors, we know what it’s like to be in the trenches and are up to date on what is currently happening in the business. Our members keep coming back to our studio because they are impressed with how much we care about the success of each of our actors through the mentoring and support we provide them.

All actors must pass a cold-read audition in order to begin taking workshops at the studio. (We do, however, waive auditions for professional actors with substantial credits on IMDB.) This guarantees that the talent level remains consistently strong. The high success rate of our actors’ auditions and bookings reflect the strength of our actors and the quality of the information imparted in our workshops.

Considered the ‘Little Known Jewel of the Workshop World’, our classes are smaller than most as we turn away more than 20% of actors who audition for us. We want to attract the best casting directors by showcasing the best actors.

Conveniently located off the 134 in Burbank, (near the Warner Bros lot), the studio offers free parking for every workshop.

If you’re looking for a friendly, professional, supportive environment to attend workshops, that doesn’t feel like a factory farm, we encourage you to give Connect Studios LA a try.

Ayumi and Doug

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been there, learned there, booked from meeting casting people there, and teach there.

Hope this helps.

I feel really good about my demo. It is a quick and fun process, even for someone like me who gets very self concious. :)

The demos are great. Superb quality. Why go anywhere else?

Having a well-produced demo is one of the most important things in the VO business. I had a number of demos made from other producers in the past and they all had one thing in common — that manufactured, cookie cutter sound!
What sets David apart from the rest, besides his affordable price and tremendously fast turn around time, is that all of the clips you record with him sound unique. Each spot sounds like an actual commercial you recorded for a job.
My agent loved the quality and even asked who produced it to refer his other talent there!

Thanks again, David for producing such a great, high quality demo for me. You made the process relaxing and enjoyable. I urge anyone reading this unsolicited reply to listen to David’s student demos to hear the difference for yourself. Anyone would be lucky to work with him

When v123 indicates the audition is for a student/ nonprofit are we to assume it is for $0. If so, why does the audition ask for an amount to be entered?

I did get this scam through Voice 123. In our discourse, they offered me the gig and they gave me the name of a legit local place to record and the same runaround with the money. I didn’t send anything, but instead, I called the studio to make sure the booking was for the day we set up, and lo and behold, the people there had no idea what I was talking about. I then tried to call back my “contact person” who was setting this up and there was a fax machine beep on the other end. I immediately contacted Voice 123 and told them what had happened. You know what they say…if it sounds togaed to be true, it probably is. Thanks for the reminder!

    …too good…not togaed.
The one time spell check didn’t work!
