On Being Financially Safe

Hey there!

As I speak with actors and VO talent when I meet them for coffee dates, I often hear the same sentence:

“Money is really tight right now.”

I get that. As artists, we often put our art before our financial safety.

Some people even wear that strategy as a badge of honor.

I’m here to to tell you that you’re hurting yourself in many, many ways if you don’t get financially safe. Continue Reading →

How Joseph Narducci Became An Audie Finalist With His First Audiobook

Hey there!

One day recently, I woke up to some amazing news. A friend and client of mine, VO2GoGo Pro and ACX Masterclass graduate Joseph Narducci, had been named a finalist in the Audie Awards for a book he had voiced.

His very first narration of an audiobook, by the way. Yep, he’d never narrated and produced an audiobook before.

And if you don’t know, the Audies are like the Oscars of audiobook narration. This was HUGE for him.

(And just so you know – the ACX Masterclass is currently open for registration, but only until this Friday. Click here for more details.)

So I got him on Skype and asked him how he did it. I can tell you it was inspiring a conversation as I’ve ever had. Continue Reading →

Don’t Fill The Screen With Your Script

Hey there!

A quick tip today to make your voice over work smoother and more accurate.

It’s something I discovered purely by chance decades ago, when I first started reading scripts on a screen.

Up until then, everybody’d gotten copy printed, on paper. But all of a sudden, around the mid 90’s, I started getting more and more scripts in electronic form that I could read right from the screen.

And simply because I could, I managed to make a huge mistake, over and over. Until one day, I figured it out. Mistake corrected. Here’s what it was: Continue Reading →

No Social Stalking

Hey there!

The number of inappropriate, off-putting ways some actors and VO talent go about using social media never ceases to amaze me.

And I feel sorry for them – they either figure they’ll give it a go, and see what happens, or they’ve gotten bad advice from someone on how to use social media for business purposes.

I got a brief, off-hand request on LinkedIn the other day from an actor. Let’s call him Michael.

His subject line (no body, just a subject) asked me to introduce him, on LinkedIn, to a casting director I’m connected with there. Let’s call her Jamie.

My note back to him had the subject line “No, I can’t introduce you to Jamie.”

And I also included a direct and to the point note: Continue Reading →

Let The Words Do The Heavy Lifting

Hey there!

It seems I’ve been asked more than a few times recently, by VO talent and actors, about the use of accents, dialects, characters, music and sound effects…

…when producing audiobooks.

After I gently disabuse the actor of their preconceived notions, I always end with this important and valuable suggestion: Continue Reading →

Forest – An App To Help You Focus

Hey there!

Trevor Algatt, here — I’m one of the L.A.-based VO2GoGo instructors.

I’m sure you’ve noticed:

The world is noisier than ever. News, email, mobile notifications, the siren call of social media… There are no limits to the demands on our attention, and giving in to these demands often means missing out on doing meaningful, productive, profitable work—especially as home-based VO artists.

Here’s an app that can help keep you on task. Continue Reading →
