Pixar’s 22 Rules of Storytelling – Rule 14
Hey there!
Ask me about storytelling, and how important it is to your VO career to develop and hone your storytelling skills – I could talk about it for hours.
It’s essential.
So, every so often, I like to roll out items from this list from Emma Coats, who used to work at Pixar as a story artist, and who serially tweeted Pixar’s 22 Rules of Storytelling.
I’ve been sharing with you one of these rules every so often, along with how you can apply each rule to your VO artistry.
Today, Rule 14… Continue Reading →
Bring Your Brand No Matter What The Breakdown Says
Hey, there!
One question comes up over and over and over when I talk to my lovely VO clients.
“How can I tell what they want?”
They, being casting entities, like casting directors, assistants, associates, game producers, writers, directors, and the like.
And I have a very simple, but somewhat non-intuitive answer: Continue Reading →

What Should You Do Between VO Classes?
Hey, there!
A VO2GoGo Pro client recently asked me this question:
David,
What is it that I should be doing, in between online live workouts via Zoom, and Pro Connect Lives? Most if not all of your other students are working pro’s. I’m still learning how to enunciate, and getting on with ACX, and that’s a little scary. My tech buddies are around, but availability is always in question.
Some direction would help. Thanks!
Dan
That’s a great question. And it got me thinking about all the different ways you can move your tools, career and skill set forward in between learning opportunities.
So, I started a list. Continue Reading →
Meet Ajarae. Ajarae, Meet Our Community.
Hey, there!
My friend, Ajarae Coleman, is awesome.
She’s an actor who has created a tribe of her own. That effort is doing a lot to assist other actors and VO talent to find the best resources, free and otherwise, to help them become more successful in their performance careers.
Ajarae’s really smart, really nice, really supportive, and her big “why” is wanting to be of service to her community.
And she’s got a free service that you need to know about. I find it extraordinarily valuable myself. I think you will too. Continue Reading →
Why New VO Artists Cringe At The Sound Of Their Recorded Voice
Hey, there!
So, truth be told, the title of this article should be:
“Why Everyone Cringes At The Sound Of Their Recorded Voice”…
…but it’s something that comes up in my classes a lot.
Especially in the Mastering Microphone Technique and Auditioning with Audacity classes. I talk about exactly why we hate the sound of our voice when we hear it played back.
And now, the explanation I’ve been giving for years has been corroborated by no less an exalted authority than Business Insider.
And they even created a quick video showing you why! Here it is: Continue Reading →
No, Thank You.
Hey there!
Punctuation is everything, isn’t it?
As in, how would you read the title of this post?
I have one particular way in mind. Continue Reading →
